Sweetfield Manor

Sweetfield Manor, a historic designated colonial building, was constructed at the beginning of the 20th Century for one of the early merchant families in Barbados. In keeping with the colonial nature of the buildings built in Barbados during this period, extensive limestone and pine woods were used in its construction. These materials and construction techniques are visible today and tell the wonderful history of this period home. Sweetfield Manor recently completed extensive restoration and renovation and has now been restored and modernized into a unique boutique hotel allowing her guests the opportunity to experience the beauty of the building, landscape and its surroundings. A new kitchen headed by an award-winning culinary team brings several dining experiences to allow our guests opportunities to sample both international and local flavours of the Caribbean.

Sweetfield Manor is located in the upper Garrison Historic Site (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) in the vibrant South part of the island. From its location on the second ridge of the island, Sweetfield Manor has spectacular views over the South Coast of Barbados with sweeping views of Carlisle Bay which once teemed with merchant ships but now provides excellent water sports and snorkelling opportunities in the underwater wrecks. Lush landscaping typical of the West Indies, and the resident peacock pride allow for peaceful outdoor walks and the opportunity to enjoy dining in the outdoors typical of the tropics.

Accommodations:

Following a recent restoration and renovation, our designated Barbadian historic, colonial property has comfortable, well-appointed guestrooms. Each of which are uniquely charming and all within our well-kept grounds. The rooms are distributed between the historic manor house (circa 1900’s) and the outer buildings, some of which served as stables at the turn of the last century. Spacious patios are available with several rooms to allow enjoyment of the West Indies outdoors from your own private space.

Room amenities and services were selected to make your stay as comfortable as possible and include Nespresso co?ee systems, L’Occitane toiletries, Mascioni towels and cozy terry cloth bathrobes for the cool West Indian nights. Complimentary shoe shining service, concierge and access to our award winning culinary team, spa, laundry and pressing round out the services and are all designed to make your stay with us truly memorable. Traditional room accessories including in room safes, irons, wifi access and TV’s with cable access are present in all rooms.

Colonial Manor Building

• Located in the original Colonial Manor Building are three beautifully maintained suites, that evoke the design and feel of a plantation home in the British West Indies. Coral stone walls and old pine floors set the stage for your gracious stay, and are further accented by mahogany furniture in the formal dining and living spaces.

Captain’s Quarters

• This spacious guest suite located on the second floor of the original Colonial Manor Building, overlooks the Island’s south coast and includes a beautiful, contemporarily styled king-size bed paired with a silk Persian rug. This iconic suite has a spacious master bathroom featuring a classic, marble double vanity basin and walk-in shower. Boasting spectacular views of the ocean and grounds, this room alludes to glimpses of it’s history – while resting after a long journey across the Atlantic, the “Captain” could look to Carlisle Bay and observe the anchoring Schoone

Mignonette

• Overlooking the charming mahogany lined courtyard and offering views to the south and ocean at Carlisle Bay, Mignonette is a large, elegantly furnished room located on the second floor of the Colonial Manor Building. This classic 25ft x 25ft room exudes Barbadian old world charm with mahogany furniture and a traditional writing desk, as well as, features a queen-size bed and private bathroom with a luxurious shower.

Courtyard Buildings

• The Courtyard Buildings include the original outlying buildings of the plantation home (c. 1900’s), as well as recent additions. These buildings feature six rooms which have all been renovated and restored between 2015 and 2018. Throughout the history of Sweetfield Manor, some of these buildings served as stables, kitchens and accessory storage rooms – many of these original, signature features are still visible and most recognizably so in the Cottage Villa. These distinctive attributes were responsible for the designation of Sweetfield Manor Boutique Hotel as a Historic Building of Barbados.
• The rooms in the Courtyard Buildings include those with private patios; Bananaquit Nook, Hummingbird Room and Flamboyant Room, and those without a private patio; Mahogany Room, Butterfly Room and Peacock Room. While located immediately adjacent to the main Colonial Manor Building, these rooms are accessed via a private guest only area, providing a traditional courtyard garden experience. All Courtyard rooms have direct access to the gardens and natural lagoon pool with a cascading waterfall feature, via the courtyards.

Cottage Villa

• The outlying buildings of the original plantation Manor house have been tastefully restored and renovated to house our guests. In one of the largest independent structures of the courtyard, this charming villa/cottage is a conversion of the old stables. The Carriage House was a critical part of the Sweetfield Manor Boutique Hotel’s designation as a “listed historic building” for the island of Barbados.
• Some of the floors are rustic and uneven and the divisions between the stables still exist today. The Carriage House has a large, private master bedroom with an attached master bathroom. There is a small sitting area and overhead ‘loft’ with two single mattresses sunken into the loft floor.

Our treatment area is nestled within the tranquil gardens of Sweetfield Manor. Relax, close your eyes, listen to the birds and the gentle rustling of banana leaves in the wind, whilst enjoying the benefits of a relaxing deep tissue massage.  We can’t promise you won’t hear the odd penhen either!

Restaurants

Breakfast

Guests staying with us can enjoy our famous 4-course gourmet breakfasts included in their package.

So why are the breakfasts at our luxury boutique hotel so amazing? Perhaps it is the ambience; you could easily stay our luxury hotel for two weeks and never eat in the same location. Today breakfast is served by the Koi pond with the sound of the moving water and the sunbeams trying to pierce through the Amazon Rainforest Purple Heart wooden pergola. Tomorrow, it is served in the Courtyard with its lush tropical vegetation under a canopy of ancient Mahogany trees. While you dine, the curious peacocks patiently wait to see if they will be treated with some breakfast fare as well. Maybe breakfast is simply on one of the grassy areas with lush vegetation or in the outer covered veranda of the manor with the trunk of a 100+ year old Mahogany tree as your table. Wherever breakfast is served, it is unique and quaint and an experience in itself.

Lunch and Dinner

Although not included, resident guests can ALWAYS order Lunch or Dinner. Meals are freshly prepared by our in-house chefs using the fresh and wherever possible local ingredients. We are also happy to put together tasty and nutritious picnic baskets for you if you wish.

The levy on accommodation, collected in resort, will cost between US$2.50 (£1.90) and $17.50 (£14.50 for 5* Hotels) per room per night until VAT doubles to 15% in 2020 as set by Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Mottley.
